Alumni board actions

At its spring meeting, the Alumni Board of Directors approved an increase in the level of scholarship awards made from the Alumni Presidential Scholarship endowment. Current awards of $3,000 per year will be increased to $8,000 per student in 2001. According to Vice President Tom Tillar, this increase has been made possible through successful investment returns managed by the Virginia Tech Foundation. In other actions, the board approved the establishment of two additional faculty excellence awards: for graduate academic advising and for university outreach. These awards carry stipends of $2,000 per faculty recipient and bring the total to 13 faculty alumni excellence awards presented annually.

Alumni chapters award scholarships

Virginia Tech chapters have successfully raised $125,000 in scholarship funds for incoming freshman; an increase from last year's record. Deborah Day Shelton, director for alumni relations, says the amount exemplifies the commitment chapters have to students. "Our chapters realize that supporting student scholarships strengthens alumni," she says. "A strong student population means strong, active alumni." Chapters coordinate many fundraising events--including golf tournaments, dinners, and raffles--over the course of a year to raise funds for scholarships.
