New faces and titles announced in Alumni Relations

Vice President Tom Tiller announces new appointments in Alumni Relations. Former associate director Debbie Day Shelton (communication studies '84) was promoted in June to director. An alumni association staff member for 10 years, Shelton worked out of the Northern Virginia Graduate Center alumni office, coordinating more than 20 Northeast alumni chapters.

Since transferring to the main campus, she has become staff leader for all alumni chapter programming, as well as coordinator of the "Summer Around the Drillfield" and liaison with the Pamplin College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the alumni career services. As director, she has responsibility for coordinating alumni association publications and student programs staffs.

Richard Hastings (finance '91) joined the staff as associate director in July. He had been employed with the Virginia Tech Credit Union while an MBA student, and later was promoted to the affiliated General Electric Credit Union. Hastings coordinates alumni reunions and serves as computer administrator for the office. He oversees the programs of the Alumnet¨ community and will coordinate the publication of the 1998 edition of the Alumni Directory, including CD-ROM and online versions. He also assists the Ag Alumni Organization, works with several chapters, and oversees the alumni records staff.

Patricia (Patty) Foutz is now director of university programs and services for the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, a position partially funded by the alumni relations division. She will work with Southwest Virginia alumni chapters, in addition to working with graduate and Extension programs offered through the Abingdon Center. Foutz has served Virginia Tech as an administrator for the computer science department, as director of cooperative education, and as an assistant professor of statistics.

The alumni association has educational tour opportunities planned for the following destinations: Panama Canal cruise (Jan. 17-27), Switzerland (Feb. 1-8), Canary Islands cruise (March 8-23), Hong Kong, Thailand, Nepal, and India via London (Feb.19-March 11), Egypt and the upper Nile (March 23-April 3), Northern Italy's Po River cruise (May 5-16), Alumni College in France (June 3-11), Alaska cruise (June 1-8), Scandinavian capitals and St. Petersburg cruise/tour (July 13-28), Rhine and Moselle River cruise (July 24-Aug. 4), European capitals (Sept. 2-15), Alumni College in Scotland (Sept. 2-10), Canada and New England cruise (Sept. 29-Oct. 9), and Australia/New Zealand (Oct. 29-Nov. 16).
