Virginia Tech Magazine recently learned that another graduate was a victim of the Sept. 11 attacks. Patricia (Patti) Dillaber Mickley (marketing '82) was at her desk in the Pentagon, where she worked as a financial manager, when Flight #77 hit the building. Patti is survived by her husband and young daughter.

FACULTY AND FRIENDS DEATHS

Glen Heuberger, former director of the Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center and president of the Virginia-North Carolina Peanut Advisory Committee, died Nov. 2. He is remembered for the great leadership he provided the Tidewater center from 1985 until his retirement in 1999. His relationship with the agriculture industry, including the peanut, soybean, and pork commodity associations of Virginia, made Heuberger a leader in the changing nature of Virginia agriculture. Despite state budget cuts and a reduction of staff, the dedicated work of the Tidewater center developed a research and Extension program to focus on cotton, a plant that became an important crop in various areas of Virginia.

Anne Cheney, associate professor emeritus of English, died Dec. 17. She began her 32 years with Virginia Tech in 1968 as an instructor of English. In 1971 she became an associate professor and taught until she retired in 2000. Cheney was the author of two biographies, including the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Life and Letters of Jesse Hill Ford. Her literary work led her to write and publish two poetry books, one of which was The Burg and Other Poems, a collection that included poems by several of her students. She edited and published a memorial poetry book entitled Ophelia's Legs and Other Poems by Theresa Gillespie. Contributions on her behalf may be sent to the Humane Society of Montgomery County or to the Alan B. Cheney Memorial Scholarship Fund of Birmingham-Southern College.

James W. Dean, vice president emeritus, died Jan.5. After earning his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945. During his military career he was decorated with the Silver Star; the Distinguished Flying Cross with Five Oak-leaf Clusters; the Presidential Unit Citation with Two Oak-leaf Clusters; the Asia Theater Medal; the China Order of Merit; and the Purple Heart. Dean served Virginia Tech from 1958 until his retirement in 1985 as dean of students, vice president for student affairs, and university dean. He remained active in numerous organizations until his death. His family requests that contributions on his behalf be donated to the Virginia Tech Foundation, specifically to the Dr. James W. Dean Student Scholarship Fund.

Coyt T. Wilson, former director of the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station and former associate dean of Virginia Tech's research division, died Jan. 25. A graduate of Alabama Polytechnic and the University of Minnesota, Wilson was a plant pathologist and plant physiologist. He headed Virginia Tech's agricultural research effort from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. Having earned a reputation as one of the world's leading peanut plant pathologists, Wilson joined the administrative team of the Experiment Station in 1964. An excellent administrator and organizer, Wilson was one of a small group of scientists who created a classification system that allowed researchers to examine all work previously done on a project by entering a database. A new peanut variety being released by Virginia Tech will bear Wilson's name.
