Irving John "Jack" Good, a University Distinguished Professor, Professor Emeritus, and pioneer of modern statistics, died on April 5, 2009, in Radford, Va., at age 92. Good was one of the founders of modern Bayesian inference and a member of the World War II code-breaking team at Bletchley Park. A citizen of the United Kingdom, Good was a professor of statistics in the College of Science since 1967. He held adjunct professorships at Virginia Tech in the Center for the Study of Science in Society and the Department of Philosophy. Before coming to Virginia Tech, he worked for British Military Intelligence in the Government Communications Headquarters, where he specialized in signals intelligence. He also held faculty positions at the University of Manchester and at Oxford University.
Marjorie Grene, an Honorary Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Professor Emerita, died March 18, 2009, at age 98. Grene studied zoology and minored in English at Wellesley, traveling to Germany as an exchange student and attending the lectures of Heidegger and Jaspers. She earned a Ph.D. at Radcliffe and then began teaching the history of philosophy at the University of Chicago. Her main occupations were raising her family and running a farm, first in the U.S. and later in Ireland. Grene returned to the U.S. to teach at the University of California, Davis, first as a faculty member and then as chair of the philosophy department. She published 12 books on philosophers, including Heidegger, Aristotle, Sartre, and Descartes. Volume 29 of the Library of Living Philosophers, The Philosophy of Marjorie Grene, was the first of that series to be devoted to the work of a woman.
Lucian W. Zelazny, a professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences, died on March 17, 2009, at age 66. He served as the graduate mentor or co-mentor for more than 35 graduate students and taught classes in soil chemistry, soil mineralogy, and colloid and surface chemistry. Zelazny published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and 19 book chapters, and was named a Fellow of both the Soil Science Society of America and the American Society of Agronomy, in addition to receiving the Virginia Tech Gamma Sigma Delta Faculty Research Award. He was a member of the Virginia Tech faculty for 33 years. Zelazny received his bachelor and master's degrees from the University of Vermont and his Ph.D. in soil science from Virginia Tech.

Richard "Rick" Griffiths '78, 1952-2009
Longtime university photographer Richard "Rick" Griffiths (forestry and wildlife '78) died Feb. 8, 2009, after a battle with cancer.
After graduating from the College of Natural Resources, Griffiths worked in the Department of Forestry. He later decided to pursue photography but remained at his alma mater as a talented and valuable colleague in University Relations for 23 years.
"Rick was the 'rock' in our department--a quiet man who was always working beyond his written job description," says Photo Librarian Jane Talbot. "While he was moving ahead of the pack from film to digital technology, he also researched and developed a digital organizational system that enables us to keep and distribute the more-than 25,000 images in our photo library."
Griffiths was responsible for many of the beautiful and striking photos that have appeared in Virginia Tech Magazine.
