TRAVEL

Melissa DeVaughn (English '90) moved to Alaska intending to stay for just a few years; instead, she found herself a permanent home. In Alaska Off the Beaten Path, she shares glimpses of the majesty that entranced her, providing a wealth of practical information for tourists along the way.

Written for first-time and return visitors alike, this travel guide reveals "the hidden places in Alaska that most tourists miss." Summaries of local attractions, restaurants, and lodging are sprinkled with an inside look at regional history and lore. DeVaughn also includes details on pricing, hours of operation, and contact information. For the reader's convenience, all of this is divided into sections that correspond with Alaska's five regions and the Canadian Yukon territory.

The book is published by Globe Pequot Press, P.O. Box 480, Guilford, CT 06437.

HEALTH

Anyone interested in living a longer, healthier life will find a viable plan of action in Feel 30 for the Next 50 Years. Physiology professor David Johnson (animal science '90 Ph.D.) shows how people can significantly extend the number of years they enjoy optimum physical, mental, and emotional health.

Johnson explains how and why a regimen of hormone-replacement therapies and nutritional supplements can be combined with meditation, exercise, and a good diet to radically alter the negative effects of aging. The book includes practical tools throughout, such as "Triple-Your-Youthspan" charts, brain exercises, and exercise guides. And it's never too late to start.

The book is published by Avon Books, Inc., 1350 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10019.

In Making Sense of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, author Carol Lensch (curriculum and instruction '97 C.A.G.S.) seeks to bridge the gap between the extensive research done on AD/HD and actual classroom approaches. Her goal is to help educators make informed decisions about dealing with the challenges presented by this disorder.

The book reviews and interprets studies on AD/HD that explore possible causes, co-occurrence with other diseases, diagnosis, and strategies for intervention. Each chapter closes with a tabulated summary of results. Among the five misconceptions refuted are the notions that a medical diagnosis must precede classroom intervention and that one approach will work equally well with every child.

The book is published by Greenwood Publishing Group, 88 Post Road West, Westport, CT 06881.

LEISURE

Libbey Oliver (horticulture '70), consultant and former floral services manager for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, has authored two books that bring home the elegance and beauty of floral design. Both draw on over two decades of experience with Colonial Williamsburg's singular decorating traditions.

Williamsburg Christmas, co-authored with Mary Miley Theobald, is a richly illustrated history of colonial decorating from the 18th century through today. Most arrangements chronicled are historically accurate interpretations based on period prints, a knowledge of plant materials available, and descriptions found in diaries and letters. Some are more whimsical artistic interpretations. For those who become inspired to try colonial decorating at home, the book includes how-to diagrams for three of the most popular arrangements: the mixed fruit wreath, apple cone, and apple fan.

Devoted entirely to the how-to vein, Flowers Are Almost Forever is a handbook for extending the vase life and beauty of cut flowers. It is a thorough reference tool covering everything from conditioning and feeding to asking a florist the right questions. The book includes a lengthy flower checklist with average vase life in days, preferred temperature, and comments on the special needs of each flower. Closing chapters cover practical arranging tips and things every gardener should consider, like skin care, tool maintenance, and environmentally sound gardening techniques.

Flowers Are Almost Forever is published by Brandylane Publishers, Inc., P.O. Box 261, White Stone, VA 22578. Williamsburg Christmas is published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 100 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011.
