FACULTY and FRIENDS' DEATHS

Fred Lutze, professor emeritus in the Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, died Dec. 2. Lutze earned his bachelor's degree from Worcester Institute in 1959 and his master's and Ph.D. from Arizona State in 1964 and 1967, respectively, before coming to Virginia Tech, where he spent the remainder of his academic career. Although he officially retired as a full-time faculty member last May, Lutze continued to work with students, including serving as the faculty adviser to the Aerospace Engineering Honor Society, a position he had held since 1968, and as an adviser to the student chapter of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics. Hassan Aref, dean of the College of Engineering, says, "The time he spent as an adviser to students was phenomenal."

Charles "Chuck" Noe, former head basketball coach, died Dec. 8. Noe, a 1946 graduate of the University of Virginia, was a guard for a Cavalier team that had four consecutive winning seasons. He coached at Virginia Military Institute in the mid-1950s before coming to Virginia Tech for seven years, coaching the team to a 109-51 record. In 1962, he went to South Carolina, then to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as athletic director and basketball coach for six years. Later, Noe hosted the University of Virginia football and basketball coaches' shows.

James B. Eades Jr., former professor and department head of aerospace and ocean engineering, died Dec. 14. Eades received his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering and mathematics from Virginia Tech in 1944, and his master's and Ph.D. in engineering mechanics, mathematics, and fluid dynamics from Tech in 1949 and 1958, respectively. He was a professor of aerospace engineering from 1947 to 1957, and later served as department head. Among his professional honors were a National Research Scientist Fellowship, associate fellowships in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and membership in the Virginia Academy of Science.

James E. Montgomery, former faculty member in the former College of Home Economics, died Jan. 11. Montgomery, who earned his graduate degree from Vanderbilt University, was a specialist in housing issues and taught at Oklahoma State, Cornell, Penn State, and Florida State before joining Tech's College of Home Economics in 1967 to serve as head of the Department of Management, Housing, and Family Development. While at Tech, his academic interests turned to issues associated with aging. Montgomery left the university in 1976 for the University of Georgia.

Col. James H. McCann Jr., former professor of military science, died Jan. 12. McCann graduated from Virginia Tech in 1930 and served in the Army Reserves until called to active duty during World War II, where he earned a Bronze Star. He returned to Virginia Tech in 1946 to teach military science and tactics for three years before accepting other military assignments. In 1962, he retired and returned to Blacksburg for good, taking the job of assistant commandant for the corps of cadets. McCann retired in 1976 as one of the longest-serving officers on the cadet staff in Tech history.

Michael Appleby, former professor of urban studies, died Jan. 26. Appleby, who graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a degree in political science, was a devout Quaker, and took off for a year of service before earning his doctorate in urban and regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1973, Appleby became an adjunct professor at Virginia Tech, but left in 1982 to spend five years in a community service program in Africa. Afterward, he returned to teaching at Virginia Tech, but continued making trips to South Africa to further the cause of democracy there. Appleby retired from teaching for health reasons in 1995.

Bernard "Bernie" F. Feldman, professor of biomedical sciences and pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), died Feb. 19. An internationally recognized clinical pathologist and hematologist, he joined the faculty of the VMRCVM in 1990. In addition to teaching and mentoring DVM and graduate students, he directed the Veterinary Clinical Diagnostics, Clinical Pathology, and Comparative Hemostasis laboratories in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. "This is an enormous loss, not only for our college, but for the international veterinary community," said Dr. Lud Eng, a long-time colleague and head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. "Bernie was a tremendous professional and a wonderful colleague. We will all miss him deeply."

Herbert Donald Stiles, associate professor at the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Blackstone, Va., died Feb. 21. Stiles earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from Rutgers University and, after serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1974. He was named associate professor at Virginia Tech in 1978 and taught at the Blackstone center until his retirement in 2002. During this time, he served as both a researcher and Extension horticulturist. In these roles he cooperated in the development of new high-quality raspberry varieties (including one that is named for his wife) and invented new trellising systems to improve efficiency of raspberry and blackberry production.
