Al Payne, counselor to generations of students, dies
 The Rev. Alfred C. Payne, pastor, counselor, and friend to the Virginia Tech community for more than half a century, died Nov. 8. After serving in World War II--during which he was awarded five Battle Stars and two Bronze Stars--Payne attended Yale Divinity School, earning his divinity degree in 1946. That same year, he and his wife, Virle, came to Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he became associate secretary of the YMCA. Payne left to work with the YMCA in Pittsburgh in 1949, but returned to VPI in 1958 to succeed Paul Derring as secretary of the YMCA. In 1964, Payne was appointed as assistant to the dean of students, and later served as counselor for religious affairs. Although he formally retired in 1981, he continued to serve the university and his community as a friend, pastor, and advisor.
Among the many roles he played at Virginia Tech, Payne participated in the dedication of dozens of buildings on campus, including, in 1993, the residence hall named in his honor. As well, Omicron Delta Kappa, the honorary leadership society, recognized his service to the community by establishing the Alfred C. Payne service award. Payne also served as honorary chairman of the United Way of Montgomery, Floyd, and Radford, and was named a Distinguished Citizen by the Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce. Payne, who had published two books compiled from thousands of his prayers, A University at Prayer and A Community at Prayer, was in the planning stages of a third book.
"He was a man of conviction, a man of his times, and a man who loved his life here with the extended Virginia Tech family," says Virginia Tech President Charles Steger, who was a student at the university when Payne was assistant dean of students. "We will miss him."
Faculty Deaths
Robert Cary Heterick Jr., vice president emeritus at Virginia Tech, died Nov. 7. Heterick, (civil engineering '58; M.S. '61; Ph.D. '68) began his varied, 33-year career at Virginia Tech in 1959, teaching in the department of civil engineering. He was named director of the University Computer Center in 1968, and joined the College of Architecture and Urban Studies as professor and director of the Design Automation Laboratory in 1973. In 1985, Heterick moved to the Department of Management Science in the Pamplin College of Business and was named vice president for information systems. Under his leadership, the university installed most of the most comprehensive voice, video, and data systems in all of U.S. higher education. After retiring from Virginia Tech in 1991, Heterick was named president and CEO of Educom, a Washington-based professional association.
Herbert Hall "Bill" Mitchell, 86, the founding dean of Virginia Tech's business school, died Oct. 30. Mitchell taught at several universities before becoming chairman of the department of business administration at what was then Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1960. In 1961, he was appointed dean of the newly established business school, which had 28 faculty members and 823 students. Mitchell served as dean for 20 years, during which time the business school became a college in the university and named its building in honor of Robert B. Pamplin, a 1933 business graduate. (The college was renamed the Pamplin College of Business in 1986.) Upon his retirement in 1981, Mitchell was named dean emeritus and returned to the University of Alabama, where he had received his bachelor's and master's degrees and had worked as an assistant dean, to serve as dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration until 1986.
