Class of '56 celebrates 50th

VPI Class of 1956

More than 290 members of the Class of 1956 and their guests returned to campus Oct. 20-22 to celebrate the class' 50th anniversary reunion. A class gift totaling $594,267 was raised to support the Holtzman Alumni Center, Solitude, Newman Library, a University Honors Scholarship, and a scholarship for the corps of cadets. In addition, the class commissioned a bronze sculpture in the likeness of William Addison Caldwell, the first student to enroll in Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Class members enjoyed a "virtual tour" of the Lane Stadium additions, tours of the alumni and conference center, a presentation on today's corps of cadets, and a regimental parade and memorial service honoring deceased classmates. President Charles Steger joined the class for its 50th reunion banquet, where classmates were inducted into the Old Guard. Festivities continued on Saturday with an academic speaker, campus tours, a pre-game "spirit lunch," and the football team's victory over Southern Miss.
