Nicholas Robert Anderson, of New Brunswick, New Jersey, who recently completed his bachelor's degree in physics, died Dec. 22, 2015.
Ethan Hatke, a sophomore chemical engineering major from Hopewell Township, New Jersey, died Dec. 29, 2015.
Faculty/staff
Susan R. Brooker-Gross, director of policy and communications for Virginia Tech's Division of Information Technology, died Jan. 2. For the division, she planned news and communications efforts and developed policies governing data access, maintenance, and security. Joining Virginia Tech as an assistant professor of geography in 1977, Brooker-Gross served as an associate professor, department head, and associate provost for undergraduate programs before beginning her work in 1997 as the student systems implementation leader for Banner, the university's application for managing student and personnel information.
Peggy Johnson Lavery, Virginia Tech's first lady from 1975-87 and a longtime resident of Blacksburg, died Jan. 20. In 1956, she married William Edward Lavery, who later became Tech's 12th president. The couple moved to Blacksburg in 1966, after William Lavery became the director of administration for the Extension division. Peggy Lavery served as a 4-H leader for her children's 4-H Clubs, a den mother, a parent-teacher association volunteer, a Sunday school teacher and coordinator, and an officer in the Virginia Tech Faculty Wives Club. In the early 1990s, she returned to work full-time, serving in administrative and marketing roles in senior care. She gained a reputation for her experience and advocacy for improving the lives of senior citizens and was appointed by former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder to the Governor's Advisory Board for the Aging.
Jerry Scheeler, who began working at Virginia Tech in 1971 as a filmmaker and later led the university's transitions to video and digital, died Jan. 22. Over the years, he shot the coaches' films for athletics, was a videographer for retired football coach Frank Beamer's television show, and showcased Virginia Tech's work in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Russia, and Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. For many years, Scheeler, a Montana native, taught a film production class as an adjunct faculty member, mentoring students who now work in Hollywood and elsewhere. A respected freelance filmmaker, Scheeler traveled internationally and once filmed a story on "Born Free's" George Adamson in Kenya.
