The Rocky Beginning
It's a wonder Virginia Tech survived 125 years. The first president was removed after socking a professor during a faculty meeting. His next four successors lasted only months or days, and one researcher suggested the fledgling institute was better suited as an insane asylum.

Lt. Paul Frederick "Freddie" Cobb '66 died in 1968 as he led his Marine Corps unit to defend a besieged company in Vietnam. But the passage of nearly 30 years hasn't dimmed the memory of his former Virginia Tech classmates, who are raising a $75,000 scholarship in his name.
